The root canal is the space inside your tooth that holds soft tissues such as blood vessels and nerves, collectively called the tooth pulp. If you have a root canal problem, the symptoms are often quite uncomfortable. If you believe your tooth pulp has been damaged or become infected, you should see your dentist or endodontist as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Root Canal Issues
Problems with the root canal usually occur because of inflammation or infection of the tooth’s soft interior tissues. Bacteria is able to make its way inside the tooth through cracks, decay, or other damage, leading to infection. Some symptoms that could indicate an infection in your tooth pulp include:
- Severe discomfort in the tooth or surrounding area
- Extreme sensitivity
- The appearance of pus or blisters along the gum line
- Symptoms of infection such as fever or an overall flulike feeling
A persistent toothache or extreme sensitivity is usually the first symptom of root canal problems. If you see a dentist or endodontist as soon as possible, you can receive a quick diagnosis as well as appropriate treatment, making it more likely that you will be able to keep your tooth.
Treatment for a Root Canal Problem
The most common treatment for a problem in the root canal is root canal therapy. This procedure, typically performed by an endodontist, removes all the infected tissue from inside the tooth. The tooth’s interior is then sanitized and filled with a sterile substance that helps keep the tooth intact. The last step is to treat the tooth with a dental crown for durability and longevity.
There is no way to know for sure if the interior of your tooth is infected unless you visit your dentist. To avoid long-term issues and to be sure your teeth remain strong and healthy, visit your dentist twice a year. This will make it easier for your dentist to diagnose any decay or infection in early stages when it can be more easily treated.
