Many people experience extreme sensitivity as a symptom that they require root canal treatment. During the treatment, though, your endodontist removes all the nerve tissue from the inside of your tooth, so sensitivity will no longer be a problem. However, you will have some discomfort for a few days after the treatment as your recover.
Recovery from Root Canal Treatment
During a root canal treatment, your endodontist will remove all the soft tissue from your tooth’s interior. This includes cardiovascular, connective, and nerve tissue. The nerve tissue in the pulp helps your tooth sense temperature and pressure, so with the nerves removed, your tooth will no longer experience these sensations. If you’ve been struggling with extreme sensitivity as a symptom of the infection inside your tooth, this will go away after your endodontist completes his treatment.
However, for the first few days after your root canal, there will be some discomfort as the tooth heals. The tissues around the tooth might feel sensitive, and the tooth itself might ache. Your endodontist will prescribe or recommend medications to help you stay comfortable during your recovery.
The Long-Term Effects of Root Canal Treatment
In the long term, your tooth will be just as usable after treatment as it was before. You’ll probably be fitted with a dental crown to be sure the tooth is strong enough to stand up to biting and chewing pressure. However, after full recovery, your tooth won’t sense pressure or temperature anymore, since it is no longer served by a tooth nerve.
Without a root canal treatment, you would probably have to have an infected tooth removed, then deal with the expense and inconvenience of having it replaced. With root canal treatment, you can keep your tooth and, if you care for it properly, you won’t have to worry about replacing it at all. A tooth that has been treated with a root canal procedure can last the rest of your life if you are careful to maintain appropriate dental hygiene and care.
